        <title type="text">New research project SatelLight-R at Smart Sensors Group</title>

        <content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>It's summer time and we kick-off our new SatelLight-R project, where we continue our successful collaboration with the <a href="https://www.tu.berlin/raumfahrttechnik">Technical University of Berlin</a> to advance research towards future optical satellite systems. Building on our previous work <a  href="./Research/SatelLight/" >SatelLight</a>, we will develop and evaluate new concepts for resilient optical satellite buses based on optical wireless communication (LiFi). The project combines expertise in optical communication, embedded systems, and simulation-based system analysis to explore secure, energy-efficient, and high-performance solutions for future space applications. <a  href="./People/jahnke/" >Marek Jahnke</a> from the Smart Sensors Group will continue contributing to the project within the scope of his PhD research: Go for it Marek!</p>]]></content>

        <content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>The Smart Sensors Group contributed four accepted papers to the 22nd IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things (DCOSS-IoT 2026) in Reykjavik, Iceland. The contributions covered main conference full paper <a  href="./Publications/#rahman:dcoss2026" >At the Edge of the Heart: ULP FPGA-Based CNN for on-Device Cardiac Feature Extraction in Smart Health Sensors for Astronauts</a> related to our project <a  href="./Research/KORVEKSiS/" >KORVEKSiS</a>, one paper at HIEMI Workshop <a  href="./Publications/#rakhshan:hiemi2026" >From Sound to Species: A Modular Acoustic Sensor for Biodiversity Monitoring</a> related to <a  href="./Research/BioDivKI2/" >BioDivKI2</a>, as well as Poster contribution on new research idea on <a  href="./Publications/#rahman:dcoss2026poster" >POSTER: Discrete Wavelets as Zero-Parameter Front-End for Near-Sensor Cardiac-Interval Estimation from Seismocardiography</a> and a Demo on <a  href="./Publications/#rakhshan:dcoss2026demo" >DEMO: Real-Time Bird Detection with a Modular Acoustic Sensing Platform</a> which has attracted a great deal of attention. The presented work reflects the group’s ongoing research on energy-efficient, reliable, and intelligent sensing solutions for challenging environments: From space applications to biodiversity monitoring at the edge.</p>]]></content>

The encouraging discussions and responses motivates us to further deepen our research into reliable yet efficient file systems for resource-constrained and highly reliable systems such as space platforms and CubeSats.</p>]]></content>

        <title type="text">THHORs BOLT Participates in Student Training Week at Esrange Space Center</title>

        <content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>This week, THHORs BOLT from <a href="https://hamburgspace.de/">Hamburg Space Team e.V</a>. as part of our <a  href="./cubesat/" >CubeSat LAB</a>, participated in a student training week at Esrange Space Center near Kiruna, Sweden. The team was accompanied by <a  href="./People/jahnke/" >Marek Jahnke</a>, who joined the trip as a supervising PhD candidate. During the training week, the team worked on the further development of their LiFi experiment. Within the campaign we will investigate and exploit results from <a  href="./Research/SatelLight/" >SatelLight</a>, e.g. optical communication approaches for future space applications. The experiment will fly on REXUS 37, a suborbital research rocket as part of the 17th cycle of the <a href="https://rexusbexus.net/">REXUS/BEXUS programme</a>. The programme is organised by the <a href="https://www.dlr.de/de/ar/themen-missionen/weltraumforschung/forschung-unter-weltraumbedingungen/forschungsplattformen/rexus-bexus">German Aerospace Center (DLR)</a>, the <a href="https://www.rymdstyrelsen.se/en/">Swedish National Space Agency</a>, the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency (ESA)</a>, as well as <a href="https://sscspace.com/esrange/">SSC Space</a> and <a href="https://www.zarm.uni-bremen.de/en/">ZARM</a>.         <title type="text">Back in Bordeaux - 2nd Parabolic Flight for ARTIFACTS</title>

        <content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>The Smart Sensors Group at Hamburg University of Technology is back in Bordeaux for the <a href="https://www.dlr.de/de/ar/themen-missionen/weltraumforschung/forschung-unter-weltraumbedingungen/forschungsplattformen/parabelflug/parabelflug-45">45th DLR Parabolic Flight Campaign</a>, continuing their ARTiFACTS research on how gravity affects seismocardiogram (SCG) signals to advance astronaut health monitoring. Led by <a  href="./People/kulau/" >Ulf Kulau</a>, the team collaborates with <a href="https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fakultaeten/medizin/fakultaet/arbeitsgruppen/digitale-medizin/index.xml">Bielefeld University</a> to conduct experiments in microgravity. The data we collect as part of the campaign is extremely valuable for our DFG project <a  href="./Research/KORVEKSiS/" >KORVEKSiS</a>. It enables us to derive new models for compensated location vectors. At the same time, his journal paper <a  href="./Publications/#jahnke:jrfid2025" >Implementation and Evaluation of CSBM for Intra-Satellite Communication with Cuboid-Based Signal-Space generated Symbols</a> has been accepted by <a href="https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/RecentIssue.jsp?punumber=7433271">IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification</a>. This is a fantastic result from the work carried out as part of our <a  href="./Research/SatelLight/" >SatelLight</a> project together with <a href="https://www.tu.berlin/raumfahrttechnik">TU Berlin</a>.         <title type="text">Radiation Test of SpacePatch and ISFD</title>

        <content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>This week, the Smart Sensors Group had the privilege to take part in an exceptional experiment at <a href="https://www.hollandptc.nl/">HollandPTC</a>, conducted within the framework of the <a href="https://radnext.web.cern.ch/">RADNEXT</a> initiative. The main goals of our experiment were 1) Observing the radiation resilience of SpacePatch, our SCG sensor system designed for astronaut health monitoring and 2) Validating the <a  href="./Publications/#rahman2024isdf" >ISFD</a> mechanism in FPGAs for Single Event Upset (SEU) detection. Both experiments were successfully carried out under a proton beam environment. Huge thanks to our PhD researchers <a  href="./People/rahman/" >Kazi Mohammad Abidur Rahman</a> and <a  href="./People/bublitz/" >Lucas Bublitz</a> for their excellent planning and flawless execution of the experiment, and to HollandPTC, with special appreciation to Thomas Toet and Dr. rer. nat.
